Daylit Primroses

I began this painting with a gold foil sun.

The problem was that it behaved exactly like a sun. No matter what I painted around it, it demanded attention. I spent much of the process trying to persuade it to settle into the background, eventually breaking it apart and weaving it back into the rest of the surface.

The result became less about a single source of light and more about light itself—filtered through grasses, flowers, and layers of paint. The primroses emerged gradually as the painting developed, appearing where they were needed rather than where they had been planned.

Like many paintings, this one arrived by refusing to follow instructions.
