Moonlit Magnolias 1

Moonlit Magnolias I was the beginning of a small obsession with foil and reflected light. I had been trying to paint moonlight in a way that felt quieter and less literal — something atmospheric rather than dramatic — and the metallic surface opened a direction I couldn’t entirely predict.

The background was built through layered blues with areas of foil worked into the surface rather than placed cleanly on top of it. What interested me was the tension between control and interference: the foil catching light differently throughout the day, occasionally resisting the painting instead of cooperating with it. Some parts had to be softened back down repeatedly so the magnolias could remain the focus.

The blossoms themselves are painted in cooler violets and pale pinks against a saturated night blue, with the moon held slightly off-center like a quiet interruption rather than a focal point. Up close, the surface shifts between smooth painted passages and more irregular reflective areas where the material remains visible.

The piece changes noticeably depending on the surrounding light. In brighter spaces, the background becomes more luminous and metallic; in softer evening light, the painting settles into something calmer and more subdued. It works especially well in rooms meant for rest or slower attention — bedrooms, reading spaces, quieter corners of a home.
