Moonlit Magnolias 3

Moonlit Magnolias 3 moved further toward reduction. Fewer blossoms, fewer interruptions, more space left open around them. I wanted the painting to feel calmer and slightly less resolved — as though the branches were emerging out of the dark rather than being fully described by it.

The deep blue background was built with layered acrylic and metallic foil, creating a surface that shifts between matte and reflective depending on the light. Ink was used through the branches and linear details, allowing some passages to stay sharper and more immediate against the softer atmosphere around them.

The moon sits large and close behind the branches, less like a literal object and more like a source of pressure or quiet gravity inside the composition. The blossoms carry warmer pinks than the earlier paintings in the series, set against cooler blues and black linework that keeps the piece from becoming overly delicate.

What interested me most while making it was restraint — deciding what could remain empty, what could stay unresolved, and how little was needed before the painting began to hold together on its own. The reflective surface remains present throughout, but it reveals itself slowly as light moves across the canvas.

The piece changes character throughout the day, becoming brighter and more metallic in direct light and quieter in softer evening conditions. It works especially well in spaces with changing natural light where the surface can continue shifting over time.
